Smart Ones Southwestern Style Chicken Fiesta FlatbreadDon’t you hate it when you get a package only to open it to find the box inside is more than half the size of the brown box? How wasteful is that when boxes of every shape and size are available? One company does an amazing job of shipping its products filled safely to the rim.

I experienced a smaller version of this problem with the Smart Ones Southwestern Style Chicken Fiesta Flatbread. I’ve had tons of frozen meals — this blog is evidence — and when I pull out the contents from inside the box I get what I expect in size and shape.

I opened the red box and in it was a thin plastic wrapped flatbread about the size of a corn tortilla that had toppings on it. I thought it’d be bigger with its fire-roasted vegetables. Heat the flatbread and fold it in half turns it into the size of a single average-sized soft taco. Well, who orders a single soft taco and nothing else? Never mind that restaurant portions are out of control, but something about a taco just doesn’t fill you up.

To make it feel like I had more to eat, I didn’t fold the flatbread. I ate it like a tostada or rather a small pizza without cutting it into slices. The grilled white meat chicken had little flavor, much like the pre-cut frozen chicken you buy that had no flavors so you can do what you want with it.

It wasn’t until after I finished the dish that I realized it came with roasted red bell pepper sauce. I read that when I first bought it, but didn’t remember it and the sauce obviously wasn’t noticeable to remind me. Disappointing as it sounds delish. I loved the all the bell peppers (green, yellow and red), onions and corn along with the cheeses. They meshed well together and gave the chicken a much needed boost.

The directions give you directions to cook a crispy flatbread or a soft one. I opted for soft and it worked. Aside from the lifeless chicken and smaller than expected size, it tasted great although it wasn’t filling.
