Simply Snackin Jerky

Updated February 26, 2015

I’m not a big beef jerky eater. The tastier ones were fattening ones while the healthier options were dry and blah. Then I bit into Silver Creek Simply Snackin’ jerky and changed my mind. What a great and unique lineup of flavors! A treat has 50 calories, 8g protein (beef), 10g protein (chicken), 1g fat (chicken) and 2g (beef). You can carry it with you and have it on hand without worrying about melting or warping the snack.

Dried Beef Sirloin with Apples and Cherries: Beef jerky can be healthy and taste great as this one has 50 calories, 2g fat, 8g protein, 290mg salt, 1g carb, 2g sugar. This isn’t too sweet — just a gentle sweetness from the cherries and apples with plenty of beef flavor. Rating: 4/5.

Dried Beef Sirloin with Cranberries and Blueberries: Cranberries are not naturally sweet, so this dried beef sirloin is less sweet than the Apples and Cherries. Again, another lovely balance between the beef jerky and the fruits. Rating: 4/5.

Dried Beef Sirloin with Pineapples: Lightly sweet with moist beef that isn’t hard to chew. Simple, delicious. Rating: 4/5

Dried Chicken Breast with Black Bean Salsa and Wisconsin Cheddar: What cheddar? I don’t taste cheese. Salsa comes through the strongest and the jerky has black bean pieces in it, but I can’t taste the flavor. Regardless, the chicken jerky has lots of flavor but doesn’t quite measure up to the beef sirloin fruit jerkies. Rating: 3/5.

Dried Chicken Breast with Cherries and BBQ Seasoning: Being a Texan, this flavor excited me as we love our BBQ! I hoped that the strong BBQ flavors and the sweet cherries would make it a winner. The smoky BBQ appeared, but not the fruit. I might try it again. Rating: 3/5.

Dried Chicken Breast with Italian Seasoning and Romano Cheese: OK, I’m starting to think maybe I don’t like the chicken jerky as much as the beef. I do like Italian food and they flavors come through. But I find it harder to enjoy compared to the sirloins.  Rating: 2.5/5.

Dried Chicken with Mangoes and Papayas: I don’t like mangoes, both the fruit and flavored food. But I’m always willing to try things as you never know. What do you know? This is my favorite chicken snack out of the bunch. Maybe the cheeses and other non-fruit items just don’t work in the jerky. First, I thought I didn’t rate the chickens as high as the beefs because of chicken. But this tells me otherwise. I don’t think there’s much of a mango or papaya flavor, but the flavor definitely tastes like fruit. It’s like having a lightly sweeter chicken jerky. Rating: 4/5

Dried Venison with Beef and Apples: I was excited when Simply Snackin’ came out with venison jerky. I really, really wanted to like it as I wanted to something new for a change. Unfortunately, this didn’t quite captivate me. No fruity apple flavor could be had. In fact, I hardly taste fruit in most of these jerkys anymore. I’d put this on the same level as the chicken. 2.5/5.

Dried Venison with Beef, Cranberries and Cherries: This one tastes more like the meat jerkys. As slowly as I chewed, I couldn’t find any cranberries or cherries. I figured the cranberries had to shine as they have a robust flavor. Although no sweetness or sourness hit my taste buds, it was the best of the non-meat jerky. (The fact it’s venison with beef doesn’t count.) I’ll keep trying it in hopes the fruit will show up at the party. Rating: 3.5/5
