Amy's Black Bean ChiliI love beans. And several health resources highly recommended Amy’s Organic Black Bean Chili (Medium). Before eating the chili, I expected the taste of black beans drenched in a medium-spiced tomato-flavored sauce. Call it the darker black bean and spicier version of baked beans with less liquid.

And that’s what I got. I into a delicious bowl of black beans with chili flavoring that is light on the tomato flavor, a great surprise. I love tomatoes, but didn’t want a tomato-ey flavored black beans that packed a little heat. The chiliĀ  has tomato puree in it, which makes it a little thicker than baked beans, but not as thick as stew.

The small pieces of onions, bell pepper and green chiles mixed with spices, garlic and lime juice let the bowl of beans shine with the flavors of a good bowl of chili dish to take it beyond a basic tomato-based chili. The spice level hits the right notes without being too mild or giving me a heartburn. However, the bowl starts to get boring halfway through as it’s just beans and more beans. I’d love to cook half a can and put the rest away for later, but that doesn’t feel much of a portion.
